The newest installment of the Zelda franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is more or less on the cutting edge of video game technology, particularly as a launch title for the new Nintendo Switch console. But it has its origins in a 2D prototype that rendered many of the ideas that would come to fruition in the game in old-fashioned NES-style graphics, and now a fan has turned that prototype into an actual playable game called Zelda: Breath of the NES.
Zelda: Breath of the NES is the work of video game designer Winterdrake, and is something of a work in progress that the creator reportedly explains he intends to keep adding to over time:
“This project is still in its early stages…I’ll be adding more areas with distinct elements and atmospheres, puzzle elements for dungeons, and lots of ways to creatively kill enemies.”
