The 2014 Winter Olympics are starting on February 7th, and one of its sponsors is Volkswagen, who’s springing on the occasion with the Volkswagen Polar Expedition Amarok , a special edition of the Amarok truck specifically for navigating the harsh winter landscape of Sochi, Russia’s home for the games.
The Volkswagen Polar Expedition Amarok is equipped with extremely heavy-duty tires, improved shocks, suspension, and beefed-up components underneath the truck. There’s also a 2.0-liter BiTDI diesel engine, enhanced lighting, improved communications systems, and more, all designed to help the truck make the record-breaking 16,000-mile journey from Moscow to the games.
Volkswagen built three Polar Expedition Amaroks to make that trek, but you can get a good look at the truck in action via the gallery at the top of the page. As for a wider release for these special edition trucks, I wouldn’t hold my breath—but hey, the next Winter Olympics are only four years away, maybe you’ll get your chance to ride in one then.
