You might be familiar with what happens to whiskey glasses when you leave them un-rinsed overnight – the residue can make a weird pattern on the bottom of the glass. It’s this phenomenon that serves as the inspiration for Vanishing Spirits, an art series that ups the ante on what goes on in your kitchen overnight with special lighting equipment.
Vanishing Spirits is the work of artist Ernie Button, who did a little bit of research into what causes these weird patterns at the bottom of whiskey glasses. It turns out that each distillery uses different additives in their product, and the result is that no two whiskeys will leave the same visual residue on the bottom of the glass. They’re like snowflakes that you have to get drunk to see.
