Nobody knows what fresh horrors 2018 holds for us all, but the color wizards at Pantone have generously decided what its color will be. Pantone 18-3838, also known as Ultra Violet, ended up taking the honor, after meticulous consideration by the members of the Pantone Color Institute. PCI’s executive director Lee Eiseman described the color’s congruence with the times we live in like this:
“Purple is a complex color … We’re in a complex time; this is a complex color … This is the kind of color attached, historically, to originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking. These are the elements we need to create a meaningful future. Inventiveness and imagination is something we seek in our personal lives and business worlds. People are looking for that ‘magic bullet,’ and this shade is the perfect shade to lead right into it … It’s intriguing, fascinating, and magical.”
You can read more about Ultra Violet’s designation as the 2018 color of the year by Pantone right here. But in case you’re thinking that this is a belated honor for the underrated 2006 Milla Jovovich film Ultraviolet, let me go ahead and clarify the matter: No, that does not appear to be the case.
