The year 2012 has been a very eventful one.  Unfortunately, many of the events have fallen on the tragic end of the spectrum. But tragic events, as well as joyous ones, tend to produce photographs that are as unforgettable as the events themselves, and the people at Time magazine have selected the ten best.

Said to be the photographs that “moved us most in 2012,” these ten photos run the gamut from heartbreaking to inspirational. And in a time when more people are taking photos than ever before, a truly good photograph that captures a one-of-a-kind moment is more important than ever.
