One of the most valuable components of the Universal brand is its stable of beloved monsters, from Frankenstein all the way to the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Mummy is among these, and probably one of the more commercially popular ones thanks to the series of Brendan Frasier movies from the last couple decades. Now, it’s getting a new version starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, a teaser for which is now online.
When Universal says “teaser,” they mean it. Fans only have about 16 seconds to take in what the new version of The Mummy will be like. There’s a brief shot of Crowe, a line or two of dialogue from Tom Cruise, some effects shots, and regretfully, not a single moment of Lon Chaney Jr., covered in bandages and shuffling across a soundstage with his arms outstretched.
You can watch the first teaser for The Mummy below. A full-length trailer has been promised for the weekend, so stay tuned for that, as well as information on future entries in the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, reportedly including The Invisible Man in 2018 with Van Helsing and more to follow in successive years.
