Going back at least as far as 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, horror movies and politics have always been closely intertwined – and please don’t let anybody try and tell you differently. But it’s still kind of surprising to see a sequel to a very popular horror franchise – The First Purge – go so explicitly anti-Trump in its initial advertising campaign.
The first teaser for The First Purge takes the form of a hyperpatriotic commercial for “a new tradition” to protect American liberty and “keep America great.” The imagery in the commercial, unfortunately, will probably seem quite familiar to anyone who’s ever watched Fox News:
The First Purge comes to theaters, naturally, on July 4th, 2018. But if you’re struck with Purge fever you can check out the film’s official site right here in the meantime. And here’s a quick plot synopsis:
“To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.”
