Steve Wynn Spends $28.2 Million on ‘Popeye’ Sculpture by Jeff Koons

There must be spinach in the air, because Popeye is coming back in a big way. First it was a limited edition custom watch from the Bamford Watch Department, and now it’s a stainless steel sculpture by Jeff Koons being sold to Steve Wynn, billionaire Las Vegas casino owner.

The sculpture is simply called Popeye, and it’s seven feet of brightly colored stainless steel showing the iconic cartoon and comic strip character as big as life (maybe even a little bigger than life, since I’m pretty sure Popeye isn’t quite seven feet tall). Wynn paid a goodly sum of $28.2 million for the sculpture, which one could say is quite a lot of spinach.

Popeye by Jeff Koons joins Koons’ earlier work Tulips in Steve Wynn’s collection, and will be displayed in a hotel of Wynn’s that is yet to be determined. For a front and back view of the sculpture, head to the gallery up top.
