Fans of The Weeknd and Daft Punk are probably accustomed to long absences, but now all three of these music titans are back in a single song and video: “Starboy,” the lead single from The Weeknd’s upcoming album of the same name.
Some have drawn a parallel between the title “Starboy” and the recently departed “Starman” David Bowie, but the text of the video explicitly indicates that The Weeknd isn’t interested in the past, showing him smashing all of the totems of his so far brief but bright career with a bright pink cross (and that’s after his old hairstyle gets literally murdered). Then there’s the final sequence of the video, which features Weeknd and some kind of large animal (a panther?) driving through the hills of Los Angeles together, listening to music while Weeknd sings along to his own voice.
