If you’re psyched about Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, you’ll probably be interested to know that the first trailer for the movie will be hitting theaters this Thanksgiving weekend. But, it will only be hitting certain movie theaters, in certain US cities, so whether or not you’ll get to see it will depend on where you live (or where you’re willing to travel).
Those nine cities are Irvine, San Diego, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Warrington, Knoxville, Houston, and Seattle, where Regal branded theaters will be showing the trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens before every screening of every movie. It’s a pretty fascinating release strategy for a trailer that Disney knows will be a hot item, guaranteeing better-than-normal attendance in those nine cities while freezing everybody else out. It will be interesting to see if it works, and if it could lead to more locally or regionally specific release models in the future, which would be an ironic throwback to how movie distribution worked before the blockbuster success of the first Star Wars.
