It has been said that no great film has ever been made based on a video game (full disclosure: I haven’t seen Rampage yet). But I don’t know if the same can really be said for novels based on video games. In any case, there must be some commercial demand for such literary works, since Sony recently announced a prequel novel to its upcoming Spider-Man video game, entitled Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover. Here’s part of the official statement from Titan Books, which lends new meaning to the phrase “most famous”:
“Leading directly into the beginning of the game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover features some of Spidey’s most famous friends and foes, including the Shocker, Echo, the Blood Spider, J. Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane Watson, and Wilson Fisk – the Kingpin.”
Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover is written by novelist David Liss, and will center on Wilson Fisk’s probably hostile takeover of the New York City underworld, which Spider-Man will probably have a thing or two to say about. It comes out on August 21st, which gives you plenty of time to read it for a complete appreciation of the Spider-Man game, out September 7th.
