Even before Prince‘s death last year, his 1987 concert film Sign o’ the Times, directed by and starring Prince, was one of his most sought after works, owing to its extremely limited release and unavailability on DVD or Blu-ray in the United States. As with every other posthumous Prince release, it’s impossible not to have mixed emotions at the news of its new re-release, since it’s unlikely the film’s upcoming showings on Showtime would be possible if he were still alive.
If you’re familiar with Prince’s masterpiece, the album with the same name as the movie, you pretty much know the set list for Sign o’ the Times. But if you’ve never seen the movie, you might be surprised by its stylized, expressionistic visuals, as well as the different arrangements for some songs, plus the incredible experience of watching Sheila E play drums.
Sign o’ the Times will premiere on Showtime next month, on September 16th, 2017, according to Variety.
