Users of the iPhone have had access to third-party gamepads for their devices for years, but now Samsung has revealed a gamepad that’s specially optimized for use with Android smartphones. The gadget is the Smartphone GamePad, designed specifically for Android 4.1 smartphones and above.
The Samsung Smartphone GamePad differs from the usual gamepads seen for the iPhone in one big key way. Unlike iPhone gamepads, Samsung’s entry in the field designed for Android phones stands alone rather than connecting directly to the device, as it links up to your phone via a Bluetooth connection.
The Samsung Smartphone GamePad also includes several features specifically for the brand’s Galaxy users, like NFC connect support and a “Play” button on the center of the GamePad. Release details, like a firm availability date and pricing, are still to come, but you can check out a full rundown of the product’s features as well as the accompanying Mobile Console app in the press release from Samsung below.
