Almost 25 years ago four Los Angeles Police Department officers were acquitted for their on-camera beating of Rodney King, who became a national celebrity and media flashpoint as the footage of his assault by police became a huge source of controversy and conversation. Last year, Spike Lee filmed a one man show by Roger Guenveur Smith about King and the events that shaped his notoriety, and now a trailer for the film has made its way online.
While some might prefer Spike to take a more conventional documentary approach with Rodney Kings, similar to his incredible 4-part documentary about Hurricane Katrina, the one man show angle will give some of those viewers a new perspective—especially those who have never seen a spoken word piece like the one Smith has created here.
You can watch the trailer for Rodney King below. The film hits Netflix on April 28th, the same day that those aforementioned police offers received their acquittal.
