MTV has always cultivated an image of being rebellious and cool, but just like every other TV network in the world they have a legal department that sometimes has to axe cool content. That was the unfortunate fate faced by the Pop Icons series by Le Cube, an animation studio commissioned by MTV to do a series of station IDs under the mandate “let’s make fun of some pop icons using cool animations in gif style.”
The Pop Icons series must have been a little too irreverent for MTV’s lawyers, since they decided they were too hot for TV. But Le Cube put them all up anyway, and they seem more like something that would have been on the channel in its 90s heyday, but with 2015-hot subjects like Kanye West and Nicki Minaj.
You can watch all seven of the rejected Pop Icons MTV IDs in the video below. And for more from Le Cube, check out its official site here.
