Netflix continues the trend of hiring high-profile filmmakers to create content for their streaming service with Okja, some kind of science-fiction horror creation from Bong Joon-ho, known as the man behind The Host and Snowpiercer. It stars Tilda Swinton and a teaser trailer for the movie has been released from Netflix’s laboratory.
In typical Bong Joon-ho fashion, the plot of the film remains a mystery in the teaser, but the official synopsis from Netflix gives you a better idea of what the movie will be like:
“Meet Mija, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja. Following her across continents, the coming-of-age comedy drama sees Mija’s horizons expand in a way one never would want for one’s children, coming up against the harsh realities of genetically modified food experimentation, globalization, eco-terrorism, and humanity’s obsession with image, brand and self-promotion.”
Sounds like a thematically ambitious and intelligent film from Bong Joon-ho. You can see the teaser for Okja below. The film comes to Netflix on June 28th, but just as a public service announcement I will add that you can watch The Host on Netflix right this instant.
