Yesterday I gave word about a new project from the Prince estate to annotate the Purple One’s entire recorded discography. At the time, I thought that was the coolest Prince-related thing to come out that day, but that was only because I hadn’t yet heard about the release of Prince’s original studio recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which went on to become a monster hit for Sinead O’Connor in the 80s. The release of the song, which has been locked away in the Prince vault for over 30 years, comes with a video, as the official Prince YouTube channel explains:
“The following is previously unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution from the summer of 1984. It was in this very room at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota that Prince created and committed to tape one of his most beloved and iconic compositions, which six years later would become a worldwide hit for Sinead O’Connor. Prince’s original studio version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ is presented here for the first time.”
That’s pretty much all you need to know, I suspect. Below is the official video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Prince. And in honor of the theme of the song, I won’t offer the Sinead version for comparison afterward.
