Elevators have done one thing for the entire lifespan of the technology, no matter how much its advanced in the last century or so: Gone up and down. ThyssenKrupp is an engineering firm that sees the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory-like possibilities for a greater range of direction in elevators thanks to maglev technology, and they’ve recently unveiled MULTI, a concept for a cable-less elevator that travels vertically and horizontally in multiple rectangular loops.
MULTI has a functioning prototype within a test tower, with multiple cars traveling along the track. And as it happens, ThyssenKrupp has reportedly picked up its first customer for the MULTI system, and the The Edge by OVG Real Estate’s Berlin East Side Tower will have this innovative elevator as early as 2019.
After that, it may take a while before you start seeing MULTI elevators elsewhere, since installation can cost as much as give times more than a boring up-down elevator. But you can check it out in action in the video below:
