Drake. Kanye West. Beyoncé. The Rolling Stones. David Bowie. The Weeknd. These artists all had high-profile releases in 2016, and there’s something else they all have in common: They got outsold by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who died well over 200 years ago, thanks to the new box set Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition.
Released on the 225th anniversary of the great composer’s death, Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition features 200 discs and more than 240 hours worth of recordings of works by Mozart. Did The Wolf all the sudden get really popular in 2016, along with the mannequin challenge and white nationalism? No, the set outsold all the other year’s releases by way of a quirk in how Billboard calculates CD sales – each individual disc in a box set counts as a CD sold, hence only about 6,000 people had to buy the lavish box set in order to propel it to the top of the chart.
If you want to add to Mozart 225‘s success, or if you just can’t resist a good comprehensive box set, you can buy your copy from Amazon right here, where it’s priced at just under $550.
