When most people think of The Jungle Book, their minds flash to happy musical numbers about becoming a man or appreciating the bare necessities of life and so on. But that’s actually only one interpretation of Kipling’s tale, which is now being adapted in a gritty, violent, decidedly non-musical form by director Andy Serkis and entitled Mowgli.
There’s a trailer for Mowgli out now, and it showcases Serkis’ mastery of motion-capture performance that he’s already displayed as an actor in movies like The Two Towers, the remake of King Kong, and the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy. This time, the animals of the jungle are portrayed via motion-capture by stars like Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Serkis himself. Take a look:
Mowgli swings (or, wait, that’s Tarzan) into theaters on October 19th, and in the meantime you can visit its official site here, should you feel safe venturing away from your man-village.
