“Moonlight”: New Jay-Z Visual Features a Black Remake of ‘Friends’ (Video)

Jay-Z recently released a new video for “Moonlight,” a track off of his new album 4:44, but if you just watch the first 44 seconds of it that non-Tidal subscribers are allowed to see, you might think it’s a clip from a new black remake of Friends with Rae as Rachel, Tiffany Haddish as Phoebe, Tessa Thompson as Monica, Jerrod Carmichael as Ross, Lakeith Stanfield as Chandler, and Lil Rel Howery as Joey.

Actually, the truth is a lot more complicated, and the music video (more like a short film) for “Moonlight” is a fourth-wall breaking portrait of a young black artist (Carmichael) experiencing a creative crisis and some kind of transcendence during the filming of the show. Still, it’s hard not to take a look at this title sequence and not wish this was a real show:
