Before recently, the words “Magic Leap” were shrouded in mystery. It was known that the company was backed by Google, and that they were in the augmented reality business, but as for what kind of stuff they were actually cooking up, nobody seemed to know. But now, a trailer for one of the games they’ve been working on has been released, and it’s definitely been worth the wait.
The game being shown off in the new trailer from Magic Leap is steampunk-themed, carrying the name of Dr. Grordbort, a preexisting steampunk media brand. And it shows a game that uses actual decorative steampunk weapons being used to fight a robot invasion in the player’s real environment, which is of course the basic idea of how augmented reality works (the “real environment” part, not the “robot invasion” part).
But it would probably be better just to watch the new Magic Leap game trailer for yourself below. It was originally supposed to be shown at a TED Talk hosted by the Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz, but he pulled out mysteriously at the last minute – maybe because his office was always getting attacked by robots. As to how accurately the trailer reflects what the Magic Leap AR experience will actually be like, we’ll just have to wait and see, but for now it’s a pretty darn cool teaser for the technology’s possibilities.
