One of 2012’s most exciting Kickstarter projects has now reached the next stage of becoming a reality, as plans for the Lowline Underground Park in New York City have been officially approved. The first underground park in the world will be located under the Lower East Side section of the city—one can imagine it being called the Lower, Lower East Side.
The Lowline Underground Park will serve all of the needs and purposes of a traditional above-ground park but without taking up any space where the sun naturally shines. That doesn’t mean the park will be bereft of sunlight, though: One of the most important features of the park is its mirror-and-fiberoptic-cable lighting system that uses real sunlight to make the park bright and sunny even under the ground.
Right now, a testing site called the Lowline Lab is free and open to the public, so you can check out its prototypical form in New York now. You can also get a lot more information on the project and its ongoing development at the Lowline Underground Park’s official site right here.
