The world probably needs another biopic of a famous painter like it needs an ear-shaped hole in the head, but Loving Vincent, about Dutch master Vincent van Gogh, has a visual conceit that makes it automatically worthwhile. It’s billed as “the world’s first fully painted feature film,” and all 65,000 frames of it have been oil painted by hand by 125 different painters.
It’s similar to the film animation technique known as rotoscoping, but using actual oil-based paints like van Gogh used gives Loving Vincent its own unique look that makes it different from every other movie out there – an unusual prospect for any movie. It does look quite a bit like van Gogh’s paintings, though, many of which are replicated in the film’s trailer, which you can check out for yourself below:
