Super Mario Odyssey, at long last, is coming to the Nintendo Switch console towards the end of this month, and the promotional campaign has kicked up some interesting artifacts, especially in Nintendo‘s home turf in Japan. One recent example is a live-action musical commercial called “Jump Up, Super Star!” that pretty much has to be seen to be believed.
“Jump Up, Super Star!” is like a Broadway musical co-starring Mario condensed into a little over a minute and a half, and this may seem like an esoteric observation but I just have to make it: The song (which is also the official theme song for the game) sounds just like something you’d hear in a musical cutscene from Clockwork Knight 2. I guess video game musical numbers haven’t evolved much in the last couple decades.
Video games certainly have, though, as “Jump Up, Super Star!” demonstrates with its gameplay footage from the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey. The game comes out on October 27th, and you can read a bit more about it here.
