You don’t hear too much these days about the 1999 film Man on the Moon, a generally well-liked biopic about comedian Andy Kaufman and starring Jim Carrey. But contrary to what you might assume given the film’s status as an occasional Comedy Central rerun, the making of it was a significant and kind of mind-blowing experience for Carrey, and it’s these assumptions that are challenged by the upcoming Netflix documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.
Nowadays it’s common to hear stories about how Jared Leto stayed in character as The Joker in between takes, but Jim Carrey went a little nuts to play the joker Andy Kaufman for Man on the Moon, and the footage of him in character behind the scenes has been more or less locked away until now. Why? According to the trailer for Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, it’s because the studio didn’t want people to think Carrey was “an asshole.”
I guess that’s no longer a concern. Check out the trailer for Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, and watch for the movie to hit Netflix on November 17th.
