Here’s a story for the “I’m not sure if this is notable or not” file. Rapper/business JAY-Z has apparently expressed his wish for his moniker to be formatted in all caps and with a returning hyphen, after a few years spent as the more minimalist Jay Z.
The last name change came around the time of the release of Jay’s 2013 album Magna Carta Holy Grail, so it kind of follows logically that the hyphen would make a comeback now that he’s getting ready to release a new album – 4:44, which is scheduled to come out on Tidal at the end of this month.
If you don’t believe me, Pitchfork is carrying the story too, as are a variety of other music media outlets. So remember, the next time you find yourself writing or typing out Jay’s name: It’s JAY-Z, not JAY Z or Jay-Z or Jay Z. Thank you for your time.
