The latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson, Inherent Vice, is opening in less than three months, but its promotional campaign has been very restrained, at least compared to most Hollywood marketing blitzes we have to deal with nowadays. The first trailer for the movie only recently dropped, and without any advanced fanfare—of course, it doesn’t need any fanfare, because it’s awesome.
The movie is based on the psychotronic detective novel by Thomas Pynchon, and Anderson was reportedly going for a loose, stoner-friendly vibe during shooting (which is appropriate, given that the main character Doc Sportello, played in the movie by Joaquin Phoenix, is an avid fan of cannabis sativa). That vibe is reflected in the very funny trailer, which has multiple Joaquin Phoenix pratfalls and an appearance by a manic Martin Short.
