It’s been almost 20 years since The War of 1996 cost us the White House and almost the lives of our entire human race, provided of course that you accept the events of the film Independence Day as documented fact. And like all 90s pop culture touchstones, that movie is now getting its chance for a comeback – named, fittingly enough, Independence Day: Resurgence.
Independence Day: Resurgence had its trailer premiere during football on Sunday, appropriate given the original movie’s uber-American overtones. It shows the returns of Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman to the long-dormant franchise, but Will Smith is conspicuously absent from the proceedings.
Still, it looks like a good time, as you’ll see by watching the first official trailer for yourself below. Unfortunately for all of us, Independence Day: Resurgence isn’t actually set to come out on the Fourth of July next year, slated instead for a release on June 24th. Close enough, I guess.
