Try me with any cliché you want: ‘You can’t help who you fall in love with,’ ‘The heart wants what the heart wants,’ some nonsense about the ‘forbidden fruit’ being sweeter.
I don’t want to hear it. Especially not from Christie Smythe, the woman who used to cover white-collar crime for the Bloomberg News, and now is serving as a pseudo-unemployed, lady-in-waiting for Martin Shkreli, one of the world’s most reviled public figures.
As the story goes, Smythe met the fraudster while covering his continuing legal saga for Bloomberg News. And as the months ticked by, she fell for him—more and more—until she quit her job and left her husband to pursue a life with a man who had multiple years left behind bars.
This story is as sad as it is insane, because according to piece done the forbidden lovers for ELLE Magazine, Shkreli wishes her ‘the best of luck in future endeavors.’
The worst part of the entire deal—is that Smythe hasn’t been put off by what she describes as self-sabotaging fatalism from Shkreli—and maintains that she’ll be ‘waiting’ when he gets out.
Yikes. Just yikes…
