Surfing has been around for a very long time now, so you might have assumed that true innovations in the field of surfboard construction were all over and done with. But you wouldn’t have thought that if you’d been aware of the foil board, a surfboard with an underwater hydrofoil that lets the surfer hover above the waves.
Foil boards have in the past required an external source of propulsion like a boat or jet ski, but this version works all on its own (not counting the ocean, of course). Surfing legend Laird Hamilton has been touting this new kind of surfboard for a few years now, and it gets a more-than-adequate demonstration courtesy of Hamilton in a new video from The Ultimate Waterman, an annual water sports tournament.
You can watch Laird Hamilton foil boarding below. And for more from The Ultimate Waterman, check out the event’s official site right here – it starts in just in New Zealand in just a couple of weeks.
