It might seem like an easy job running Facebook. After all, it’s not like you have to provide content or anything like that, since the more than one billion users of the site handle that for you. But you do have to make certain decision that the rest of us will probably never face, such as “should Facebook users be allowed to post videos of decapitations on the site?”
Facebook recently allowed such a video that spread like wildfire through the site to stay up, despite the fact that the site has a longstanding policy of banning videos containing nudity. According to a statement from Facebook, they allowed the video to remain on the site under the reasoning that it was an important way to share human rights abuses in a viscerally effective way. But within 24 hours they changed their tune and reinstated the ban, stating that they had “reexamined” the video in question and decided it was doing more harm than good.
