Nintendo’s Donkey Kong and its ensuing sequels and spin-offs essentially created what we know as modern video games, but for more than 30 years a piece of the DK saga has been more or less lost to history. It’s called Donkey Kong 3: Daigyakushuu, known in English as The Great Counterattack, and apart from a Wii Virtual Console release in 2008 it’s been considered a lost game after not making the leap to subsequent consoles and formats for whatever reason. But now it’s back.
Fans of Donkey Kong 3 have made the game available for PC through an X1 emulator, using all of the original game’s data. Just like the original, the new version is notoriously difficult to beat, and many of the game’s later levels out of 20 are still a mystery to fans. But you can see a good half hour of action in the playthrough below:
