When most of us hear the word “sculpture,” we think of something that’s totally static and unmoving, like a statue. But that’s not always the case, as evidenced by Descension, a new installation by sculptor Anish Kapoor that can best be described as a constantly swirling black whirlpool.
Descension is the first site-specific art installation to be presented by Anish Kapoor in his home country of India, as part of the ongoing Kochi-Muziris Biennale arts festival. The piece is actually pretty small by Kapoor’s standards, with a simple iron fence surrounding the striking black whirlpool, but the effect is hypnotic.
