French electronic music duo Daft Punk scored big at the Grammy Awards over the weekend, which probably had a lot of viewers wondering who these two weirdos in helmets were. “What’s with the helmets,” I imagine my parents asking one another as they watched the Grammys. Well in case you’re dying to know what they look like underneath the helmets, pictures of the duo are out there.
You might also be interested to know why Daft Punk wear the helmets in the first place. It’s a gimmick, of course, but it also has something to do with this statement of purpose taken from an interview with Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk:
“We don’t believe in the star system. We want the focus to be on the music. If we have to create an image, it must be an artificial image. That combination hides our physicality and also shows our view of the star system. It is not a compromise.”
I’ve heard a lot of rationales for the practice of wearing robot helmets, and that’s definitely one of the most reasonable. Anyway, if you’d like to take a look at Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the stars underneath the artificial Daft Punk image, you can do so by checking out the images in the gallery up top, courtesy of Buzzfeed.
