Just when I thought I’d seen everything, Louise Harpman and Scott Specht have devoted a book, and possibly their entire lives, to the art of the coffee lid. The book is entitled Coffee Lids: Peel, Pinch, Pucker, Puncture. Here’s the official skinny, since personally I’m at a loss:
“Louise Harpman and Scott Specht have collected these familiar triumphs of industrial design, in their many variations, for decades, creating what Smithsonian magazine calls the world’s largest collection of coffee cup lids. In addition to oddly compelling close-up photographs, Harpman and Specht include lively field-guides to their classification system and patent drawings for many of the most unique designs.”
So there you have it. Don’t let anyone ever tell you your collection of whatever you like to collect is a waste of time – you might very well be able to get a book deal out of it one day, and even have your collection lauded by the Smithsonian. As for Coffee Lids: Peel, Pinch, Pucker, Puncture, you can pre-order your copy for under $20 at Amazon right here.
