Billionaire Joseph Lau is known for his big-ticket collection of gems, art, and other expensive odds and ends, and his latest acquisition broke a couple of price-related records. Formerly known as Blue Moon and renamed by the buyer Blue Moon of Josephine (for his seven-year-old daughter), the 12.03-carat diamond was purchased for $48.4 million at a recent Sotheby’s auction in Geneva.
That winning bid makes the Blue Moon of Josephine the most expensive diamond of all time, as well as the most expensive gem per-carat ever sold. I hope Josephine Lau appreciates how much Dad spent on her for this gift, even though it’s not the first time he’s made a similar gesture.
The Blue Moon of Josephine will probably not be for sale any time soon, so you’ll need to stow your dreams of owning it somewhere safe for the foreseeable future. But you can read a little bit more about the diamond and its record-breaking purchase by Joseph Lau at the official CNN site here.
