The 1992 Batman: The Animated Series is one of the most revered TV shows of the 90s (which, if you’ve ever been to a party with a bunch of 20-somethings, you know is saying something). That makes it a natural fit for some kind of revival, and DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers have announced just such a thing. But this is no traditional reboot, remake or sequel: It’s a virtual reality experience based on the show.
The Batman: The Animated Series VR experience will let users explore meticulously recreated three-dimensional versions of settings from the show, like the Batcave and the mean streets of Gotham City. It works through OTOY interactive holographic video, and will be available on the Oculus Rift, the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset, and other glasses-free screens that will equip our TVs and smartphones in the near future.
The virtual reality experience based on Batman: The Animated Series will be available in prototypical form this winter, but a wide release is still a way off, and depends on the technology being prevalent enough to support it.
