The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has long been a bastion of the kind of borderline-offensive impossible body standards that feminists and activists have been decrying for years. And it looks like the magazine is finally ready to concede to the changing times by featuring model Ashley Graham, the first plus-size model to appear in the magazine‘s iconic annual edition.
It’s easy to expect a lot of people to scoff when they get a look at Ashley Graham, who could really only be called “plus-size” with a straight face in the world of swimsuit modeling (and maybe not even there). But even though it’s all part of an ad campaign for swimsuitsforall, I think we can all agree it’s a step in the right direction – and that includes Graham herself:
“I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are too. There is no reason to hide and every reason to flaunt. The world is ready for more curves in bikinis. [Swimsuit brand] swimsuitsforall helps women feel confident and sexy in swimsuits and I am so thrilled to be a part of the #CurvesinBikinis campaign!”
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue will hit newsstands and the coffee tables and garages of Dads everywhere on February 9th. But until then, you can take a look at a teaser for Ashley Graham’s appearance in the magazine below. And for more from Graham, check out her Instagram account here.
