The process of making Anchorman 2 was somewhat unusual compared to that of other more conventional movies—instead of following a script, the film is made up of a bunch of largely improvised gags and dialogues between characters. That means that there’s a wealth of material that didn’t make the cut. So much, in fact, that an entirely new version of the movie can be constructed from the outtakes and alternate scenes.
That’s not just a hypothetical illustration. It’s exactly what Paramount and Anchorman 2 director Adam McKay have done, and they’re releasing it to theaters for a one-week limited engagement on February 28th.
The trailer for the new alternate cut of Anchorman 2 (you can watch it on iTunes here) promises “763” new jokes, which add up to a running time that’s said to be “significantly longer” than Anchorman 2‘s already lengthy two hours. And, most exciting of all, the new cut is rated R! Watch for it next week in a theater near you.
