It’s that time of year again—the time when you can’t go into any grocery store or shopping mall without having your ears assaulted by the horrible sound of stupid, corny, hackneyed Christmas songs. “Wonderful Christmastime,” Paul McCartney? No, more like horrible Christmastime, because your stupid song makes me want to punch a penguin.
Of course, there’s a great irony in all this. You would think that, because the local easy listening station switched to an all-Christmas format on November 20, they would have to dig deep and play some songs we aren’t sick of yet. But no. They’re either playing the horrible nonsense that the pop singers du jour churn out—Justin Bieber Christmas album? NO WAY!—or they play the good songs so death.
However, there is some good news. Not all Christmas music sucks. In fact, there are quite a few “classics” out there that haven’t been ruined yet, plus some more recent ones that are destined to become the classic of tomorrow. And today, we’ve got a couple of suggestions for you.
