The humble hamburger has long been man’s preferred method for satisfying his craving for beef. That’s because, unlike steaks and roasts, hamburgers were made from the cheap cuts of beef, making them accessible to the common working man on a regular basis. Also, when you add lettuce, tomatoes, processed cheese, and a bun made with bleached flour and a bunch of preservatives, they’re just totally amazing.
Lately, however, there’s been a movement to fancify the burger. A lot of gourmet restaurants now offer burgers made from expensive cuts of rare beef, topped and/or stuffed with things like fois gras and truffles. Why? Perhaps because all the anti-elite sentiment that’s sprung up as a result of the global economic meltdown has fat-cats looking for ways to disguise their indulgences. (“Hey, I’m not a Wall Street elite! I’m eating a burger just like a regular guy!) But who knows.
What we do know is that these new breeds of burgers are freaking expensive.
How expensive? Well, you’ll have to read the list to see. So check it out, but be warned: this is going to give you a serious burger craving. (Hopefully a run to Wendy’s will suffice.)
