Southwest Airlines Peanuts Discontinued Amid Allergy Scares
Hey! I got to use the word “amid” in a headline, like a grownup. The excitement I feel over that will have to be my consolation over the fact that the next time I fly, I won’t be able to enjoy a complimentary bag of Southwest Airlines peanuts, as the company’s signature snack has been discontinued. A press statement from the airline explains:
“Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA … However, to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue serving peanuts on all flights beginning August 1.”
The National Peanut Board expressed its displeasure with the move, as did Charles Platkin, a public health expert at City University of New York School of Public Health, who told the Los Angeles Times that Southwest Airlines peanuts make a good, healthy alternative to more typical snacks for people who aren’t allergic:
“Peanuts are definitely a better alternative than pretzels and other foods.”
Nevertheless, pretzels appears to be the primary replacement for Southwest Airlines peanuts. For now, if you have any sort of special attachment to the airborne legumes, better book that cheap flight to Vegas before August 1st.
