2001: A Space Odyssey

This year, 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably one of the coolest things that’s turning 50 years old. To celebrate, Warner Bros. is putting the film back out in theaters, in newly struck 70mm prints made from the film’s original camera negative, and a bunch of other filmspeak that essentially boils down to: “It will look nice.”

The re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey comes with a new trailer, that sort of makes it look like a modern-day blockbuster, albeit one with much better special effects than any science-fiction film released today. Christopher Nolan is also on hand to endorse this new release in the strongest possible terms:

“For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. This is the unrestored film – that recreates the cinematic event that audiences experienced fifty years ago.”
