‘The DAMN. Chronic’ Mixtape: Kendrick Lamar Meets Dr. Dre
I recently revisited the classic 1993 album Doggystyle, and was struck by how brilliant it feels even after 25 years, and how much of that brilliance is owed to the studio expertise of Dr. Dre. I bring it up because DJ Critical Hype has come up with a new way to appreciate that expertise, and that of Kendrick Lamar in the bargain: A mashup of the two artists entitled The DAMN. Chronic.
The DAMN. Chronic takes its name from Lamar and Dre’s signature albums, but the actual material in the mashup comes from all over their respective bodies of work. Critical Hype spent about a year creating this mashup, and as he tells Pigeons & Planes, it wasn’t just a simple cut-and-paste job:
“I was determined to make it work, but the truth is it wasn’t easy. A lot of the tempos actually didn’t mix well. It was a lot more work trying to find good mixes. I had to dig deep and make a capellas for about 60 to 70 Kendrick songs and try and find stuff I was happy with. I really wanted to mix ‘Look Out For Detox’ and ‘Money Trees,’ as well as a lot of album cuts off the DAMN. album. The problem is Dre doesn’t have many slower beats. I’m really happy with the results, though. All the hard work and dedication to this project paid off.”
