Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is now in theaters, which means it’s time to take a look back at Star Wars Episode IV 1/2, also known as The Star Wars Holiday Special. The special, from the dark age between the release of the first Star Wars movie and the franchise becoming Extremely Important, is widely known as an infamously bad kitsch bomb – but a new explainer video from Vox examines it through a different lens: The tangled, complex web of Star Wars continuity.
The Star Wars Holiday Special was the very first piece of the Star Wars “Expanded Universe” before there even was such a thing, and as such it’s an effective square one for all the myriad novels, comics, video games, TV shows, and other pieces of what used to be the Star Wars canon before the franchise was bought up by Disney.
