‘Dick Tracy’ Returning to Comic Books Courtesy of Archie Comics

Dick Tracy

Many casual fans might not be aware of this, but Dick Tracy is one of the longest-running comic strips in history, telling the saga of The City’s greatest detective since way back in 1931. But the character has never been a fixture of comic books, outside of reprints during the strip’s heyday. But now, the character is returning to comics – Archie Comics, to be specific – in a new series from writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci, and illustrator Thomas Pitilli. Here’s Segura, who also happens to serve as Archie Comics co-president, on the project:

“I have vivid memories of being completely obsessed with Dick Tracy as a kid when the movie hit, and that sent me back to explore the amazing Chester Gould strips up through Max Allan Collins’ superb work and the current, excellent dailies by Mike Curtis and Joe Staton. In my eyes, Tracy is an iconic character on par with Batman and Superman, and it makes perfect sense for another 75-year- old, iconic brand in Archie to be bringing him back to monthly comics.”

The new Archie Comics Dick Tracy series will focus on Tracy’s early days on the force, but outside of that you can expect to have to wait a bit for more details, since the first issue won’t be out until April of 2018. But in the meantime you can read the original report on the series right here.
