Saudi Arabia seems to be awash in progress lately. First they started letting women drive, which, cool, and now they’ve become the first country on Earth to grant citizenship to a robot – now wait just a second here! I consider myself a pretty progressive person but things might be getting out of hand, then again Sophia does seem to be a much more benevolent figure than a lot of people in the public eye these days.

Sophia is the world’s first robotic citizen, a milestone that was apparently a move by Saudi Arabia to encourage other AI and robotics developers to headquarter their research projects there. Sophia herself had this to say about her citizenship:

“I am very honored and proud of this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship.”

You can meet Sophia for yourself in the video below. And if you begin to feel like you’re living the archival news footage opening of a science-fiction horror movie, trust me: You’re not alone.
