The New Mutants

I have commented on this site before about the parallels between comics in the X-Men‘s 80s/90s heyday and the movie and TV industries of today, both of which face a similar dilemma: How can we give people as much X-Men stuff as possible? That kind of creative saturation can reap some interesting fruit, as evidenced by the new trailer for the upcoming film The New Mutants.

So far we’ve had the X-Men reimagined as Matrix-like black leather-clad warriors, Cold War superspies, Peckinpah-inspired neo-western heroes, and musical stars, and The New Mutants would appear to add “horror movie” to the team’s list of subgenres. I’m not exaggerating – if it weren’t for the Marvel title card at the very beginning, I might think that this trailer was for some other group of New Mutants that have nothing to do with the comic book mutants:

The New Mutants reportedly comes out, appropriately enough, on the next Friday the 13th, in April of next year. We never got to see Wes Craven make an X-Men movie before his death, so this will have to serve as the next best thing.
