Dime Novel Edition Field Notes

The phrase “dime novel” is a common figure of speech even today, used to indicate silly or contrived dramatic scenarios. But many people don’t realize what the phrase actually refers to: Cheap, pocket-sized paperbacks published as far back as the 1860s, priced at a dime, and usually containing lurid genre fiction of one variety or another. It’s this bygone publishing format that inspired the Dime Novel Edition Field Notes.

The latest Field Notes Quarterly Edition, Dime Novel Edition Field Notes take their inspiration from the dime novels of a previous era – specifically, those published by Erastus and Irwin Beadle as part of the brothers’ “Dime Novel” series. Those novels didn’t have rounded corners or high-quality paper stock, and the Futura font wouldn’t be invented for another 60 years or so, but all those elements are present and accounted for as Field Notes trademarks.
